GIS – Applications and new research directions

Aim of the lecture

The lecture consists of three parts: In the first part (2V, Sester) of the course research topics in cartography and geoinformatics are presented. In this way, the students get acquainted with the state of the art in this domain. Further, they get in contact with current research examples of public administration and private enterprises.

Two other parts of the lecture wil deal with Geodatainfrastructures (1V, Dr. Willgalis) and Aspects of GIS in practise (1V, Hon.-Prof. Dr. Buziek).

Applications and new research directions

The course presents current research topics, e.g. spatial query languages, Artificial Intelligence and Data Mining and the analysis of spatio-temporal data. These topics may vary and are adapted to current research topics of the institute. Additionally, there is an extra block included in this lecture related to the topic Geo Data Marketing, which is presented by an external lecturer of the Landesamt für Geoinformation und Landesvermessung Niedersachsen (LGLN).

Geodata Infrastructures

The module provides legal, organizational and technological foundations as well as practical examples of current spatial data infrastructures. Upon successful completion of the course, students can name and explain key national and international spatial data infrastructures. They can classify, characterize and compare them and assess and evaluate their significance.

GIS - Practise- and Vizualisation Aspects

The lecture introduces the application of Geoinformation Systems (GIS). It also deals with sales and project-related aspects and methods as well as aspects of the visualization of geoinformation. Against this background, the participants will be able to design and evaluate concepts for the visualization of geoinformation.
