Introduction to GIS and Cartography

Aim of the Module

The module imparts basic knowledge about the acquisition, processing, analysis and presentation of geodata. At the end, students will be able to use GIS software in order to solve simple spatial problems. They are able to convey spatial information using cartographic methods.

Contents of the Module

Lecture: Concepts and tasks of cartography and geoinformation systems, overview of spatial reference systems, overview of modelling of spatial objects; abstraction and generalisation steps for data acquisition; methods of spatial analysis, generalisation, possibilities of graphical presentation. Consolidation of the lecture material by means of practical exercises with a GIS software (ArcGIS).
