GIS I – Data Modeling, Data Structures

Lecturers: Monika Sester, Yu Feng

Aim of the Module

The module (2V/1Ü) imparts knowledge about basic concepts in the collection, storage and processing of spatial data. In the first part of the module the basics of object-oriented modelling of spatial data are developed and suitable data structures for their storage are discussed. In particular, the collection of terrain data and the calculation of digital terrain models from these data will be addressed. In the second part of the module, the knowledge of spatial access structures will be deepened and methods of geometric data analysis will be presented. After successful completion of the course, students will be able to model spatial data for specific applications and will be able to evaluate suitable spatial data structures for storage with regard to their suitability. In addition, the students will have extensive knowledge of spatial algorithms for answering typical GIS questions. The exercises will deepen the lecture material by means of programming tasks in the Java programming language, which will enable the students to implement modules for different tasks in the GIS context themselves.

Contents of the Module

Geometric, topological and thematic data models and structures, basics of digital topographic information systems (ATKIS), terrain modelling (Digital Terrain Models - DTM), terrain acquisition, interpolation and approximation algorithms.

The module is a partial module of the module: Modelling and acquisition of topographic data
