GIS for navigation applications

Lecturers: Claus Brenner and Frank Thiemann

Aim of the Course

The module provides an overview of the basics of vehicle navigation systems and deepens practical skills in dealing with geodata. After successful completion, students can explain the components of vehicle navigation systems and apply algorithms for route planning and position determination. They can solve complex spatial problems using GIS software, programming and other software. They are able to implement their own analysis/processing functions with the Python programming language.

The module consists of two parts:

  • GIS for vehicle navigation 1 V 1 Ü
  • GIS Practice 2 Ü

Content of the Course

The course GIS for vehicle navigation will teach the use of digital maps for vehicle navigation. In particular, the preparation of the underlying GIS data, route planning, localisation of the vehicle and the human-machine interface will be discussed. In GIS practice the students work on a complex GIS task under guidance. They mainly use the GIS software ArcGIS and the programming language Python. ATKIS and OSM data and digital terrain models are used. The fundamentals will be worked out individually and presented as presentations. The models, algorithms and programs developed in groups will also be presented.
